We've just released a new data/research tool on StockCentral -- industry averages for key ratios.

It's in the Data tab on the site. After you log in to the site, click the Data tab, and you will see two links in the red subtab bar --  one for "company" and one for "sector/industry."

Click the Sector/Industry item, and you'll see key averages for all industry groups. From here, you can do a couple of things: you can limit the list to only display the industries in one of the 9 sectors by using the Sector dropdown list at the top.

You can sort the data in any table by clicking on a column header. This will re-sort the list of industries or companies by that header item in ascending/descending order.

Click an Industry name, and you can see all the component companies of that Industry group -- as well as the averages for that Industry group itself  at the top of the page. This makes it easy to compare the company to its peers and to the averages for those companies.

Click a Company name, and you can view the StockCentral Data Report for the company.

You can export any of the results in (fake) Excel format (as with the Screener results, you should ignore the Excel warning message) or display a print-ready version.

These are "raw" averages, calculated in exactly the same way that Stock Prospector has always calculated them, but of course we use Morningstar data as we do in our *.SSG datafiles. We are producing the same averages as we used to provide on the ICLUB.com web site, but now the data is updated automatically each weekend.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions for this tool.

I suggest that you add the number of companies in each industry.

For example, I counted the companies in the Medical Labs and Research Industry and see that PPDI ranks 6th out of 33 companies in terms of Pre-Tax Profit Margin.  And, in the Catalog & Mail Order Industry, I count that AMZN’s Pre-Tax Profit Margin ranks 10th out of 45 companies.

However, for other industries such as Biotechnology or Business Software & Services, there are too many companies to reliably count by hand.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll add it to the list of possible enhancements!

Armin-

We actually added the number of companies to the industry list today. When you get to the listing of companies in an industry group, the number will be displayed at the top next to the sector & industry names.

I came across two, troubling discrepancies:

- For RATE, the Hemscott data file shows 32.1% five-year average PTPM while the web site Industry data for RATE shows 28.1%;

- For FTEK, the Hemscott data file shows 10.7% five-year average PTPM while the web site Industry data for FTEK shows 9.7%

I checked twice for both, once on 11-7 and then a week later.

Is there any reason for the data file to differ from the Industry data?

We're looking into this first thing today. Thanks for pointing it out.
