You may notice that we are experimenting with Google AdWords on some StockCentral.com pages. I wanted to let you know that we haven't made a decision about whether this is a permanent move; for now, we're just exploring it as an option to see if perhaps it would allow us to reduce the annual subscription cost of membership.

We are always open to feedback from users, so feel free to let us know if you have any thoughts.

As long as the advertising doesn't overwhelm by SCREAMING for attention or somehow change or damage your editorial content/credibility & the advertising dollars help you to create & deliver a better website then go for it.  Maybe someday I'll even see an adv. of interest & everybody wins.

As a PS I'm fascinated by the survey on the home page.  With 420 responses to date the site seems to consistently draw 80%/20% club members to individual investors... a varied yet informed audience.

Gee, Doug, I'm surprised you haven't had more feedback on this. I've not visited for a few days, and it is the first thing I noticed. I don't know how much control you would have over what ads are shown. I agree with Stephen, they should be relatively unobtrusive, and furthermore, they should be screened for suitability for our style of investing, no hot tips and day trader stuff. I would think most people would rather pay less, especially to get the full range of premium services when you reach that point. After all, while you definitely are dedicated to providing quality services and education to clubs and individual investors, you aren't pretending to be a non-profit organization. Best wishes, Gene

Doug

I have noticed the ads but they are not interfering and thus easily ignored and thus I see no problem with them if they provide a bit of revenue.  I do agree some of the ads may entice a novice to enter into some sort of risky investment.  This seems to place you in a difficult position of desiring to collect ad revenue while also trying to alert investors to beware of schemes that seem to offer too much to be true.

I do hope you will avoid pop ups since they do bother me.  I stopped subscribing to Forbes because their pop ups were so bothersome.

That's a good point, Dan.   If the ads help keep the subscription price down, I am all for them, but perhaps it would be well to have a disclaimer right above the ad menu that StockCentral is not endorsing these companies, and to be alert to the risk features they may have.

We do have some (but not complete) control over what kinds of ads appear and don't appear in Google AdWords, but over time ads that don't generate a response will stop appearing on our site anyway. We'll continue to monitor the ads and see how we can eliminate any that are suspect.

We won't be adding pop-up ads. They're annoying and most browsers block them now, so they're ineffective as well.

Thanks for your feedback!

Nice bookstore

Yes, we added an Amazon bookstore to the site, which is accessed via the "Bookstore" tab (for now). We asked our various resident pundits to select their favorite investment books, and added them to the store as well as the picks that StockCentral members have made in the "favorite books" thread in the Classroom forum.

I'll emphasize that right now we're experimenting with these types of advertising and marketing, in an attempt to see if we can generate sufficient revenue from these sorts of opportunities so that we might keep the StockCentral membership cost as low as possible. But it was fun collecting book recommendations from Ellis & Ralph & Rajiv & Mark!
