Stock Prospector has always seemed like a stepchild in the list of Iclub software. It gets very little mention. When there are articles in BetterInvesting about screening it is rarely used in examples. There are very few enhancements or new releases. What's the future of this product? More immediately, is there a way to import StockCentral data instead of OPS data? If so, how?

I certainly agree that Stock Prospector is under-rated and under-promoted. I always enjoy using it and finding all the hidden features in the program, and really like teaching it at events. Part of the reason that it is not more widely used is that the interface is a bit clunky, which confuses some users.
Unfortunately, Stock Prospector can't be converted to use StockCentral data, at least not in the foreseeable future.
However, we do have some other ideas about stock screening, so keep watching StockCentral....

On a related note, when will Stock Analyst and NAIC Classic be updated to be able to import Stock Central data? Please don't try to tell me that is not a trivial task like the answer you gave for Prospector. If that is the answer you get from your technical stafff then IMO you don't have the right kind of people on your technical staff.

Tom--
Actually, I said that "Stock Prospector can't be converted to use StockCentral data." And I also have to add that Stock Analyst and Classic Plus can't be converted to use StockCentral data (automatically within the program). It has nothing whatsoever to do with technical issues. These are products that we developed for and that are sold by NAIC, so there are limits to what we can do in the software. I wish that circumstances were different, but unfortunately
that's not the case.
Investor's Toolkit has a different legacy, so the situation there is different.

If I may, I'd like to make one slight correction to what Douglas said.
"Stock Analyst and Classic Plus can't be converted to use StockCentral data."
The correction is this: both Stock Analyst and Classic Plus can read and import *.SSG files that you download from StockCentral. What can't be changed is doing this automatically from within the program, and doing automatic updates from within the program.
If you don't mind downloading your *.SSG files manually, you can then update from them.
If you configure your computer so that *.SSG files are associated with either Classic Plus or Stock Analyst, then clicking an SSG line at StockCentral will result in the file being downloaded and opened in the program of your choice.
To summarize: automatically downloading or updating from inside of Classic Plus or Stock Analyst won't work. Using StockCentral data with Classic Plus or Stock Analyst will work!

Doug,
I would hope that Stock Prospector is still going to be product that is maintained. The S&P database that it accesses contains stocks not in the StockCentral database - Canadian stocks that trade only on the TSE.

Something here just doesn't make sense to me Doug. Toolkit also was a product developed for NAIC and sold by NAIC. Both InvestWare (creators of Toolkit) and STB Software (creators of Classic, SA and Prospector) were bought by IClub. How is it then that Toolkit can have a different legacy than the other 3 programs that allows it to be modified to automatically update but those other 3 programs can't? Tom

Since Stock Analyst cannot download and update from the program, it will be too inconvenient to swith from OPS as a paying member. Do you intend to develope new software that incorporates the best of Stock Analyst and Toolkit 5? If so will Stock Analyst users be able to buy at the same discount price you probably will offer Toolkit 5 holders to upgrade?

You answered it yourself -- Investware developed Toolkit and STB developed Classic, SA & Prospector, so each product is governed by different contracts, understandings, agreements, or lack thereof. Suffice it to say that we're always looking ahead, and working on new ideas and projects. Having our own data service certainly means that we can offer a lot more to users, not only at StockCentral.com (such as the company reports and Take Stock) but in other products, as well. And I can pretty confidently say that we won't discriminate against any users of software that we've developed! Doug

Doug I don't think I answered anything. Who developed them shouldn't matter here because IClub purchased both companies and their products. You may have answered by saying they are subject to different terms based on the contracts IClub signed when purchasing them.

I agree with everything said here regarding SA and Prospector, except I think that SA has always been the forgotten child... That's money I'd like to have back, it was touted as the big brother to toolkit, but so far, not so much a legitimate sibling.

That would be nice to have a merged product. Take the toolkit form and the SA and merge the capapbilities. This would also ease the communication gap when posting from the different programs. Stock Analyst Toolkit, wow a built in acronym!
