Living in San Jose I see a lot of articles about local companies. Many of these are quite well known. The local news organizations do not spend much time on companies that do not have a strong local presence. I suspect this is true for other communities. Starting in late May I took a trip with my wife to the Boston area to visit family and then to Maine. While there I read the local newspapers including the Business sections. It gave me a better feel for the economy outside my area. The newspapers also included news on local companies. I decided to investigate two companies from my reading as possible investments when I returned home. One ended up being a privately held company. The publicly traded company was Akamai Technologies (AKAM). After doing my research and completing an SSG for AKAM I decided not to invest now. I am putting it on a watch list though as it is close to the buy zone. Being surrounded by many tech companies at home I probably would not have considered AKAM even though I knew of the company. When away from home, on vacation or business travel, take some time to read local business news. You might find an intriguing prospect to add to your portfolio.
