THE "LIKE TOOLKIT 6!" EDITION 14 APRIL 2011

WHAT'S THE REAL PRICE TAG?
Gas Prices on the Rise; BP Grant Boosts Florida Tourism

In what's known around here as The D, the city where your reporter was born and raised and will always call home, people's spirits have been buoyed recently by the resurgence of the automobile industry and the state's economy overall. Enter the current gas crisis.

Just when the chit-chat had turned upbeat, prices at the pump began to rise. And rise. And now there's an undertone of concern. How will the prices at the pump affect our fragile economic turnaround?

That's not just a Michigan question. In a global economy, it's also a national and international query. What's your take? How might gas prices that are rumored to hit $5 by Memorial Day impact our economic recovery? Sound off in The Exchange. SC Member Danny Matthews already has:

"Americans will never learn to conserve," he posts in The Exchange. "Beyond that, I see this may push alternative energy solutions to the forefront. All kinds, wind, solar, nuclear, natural gas, and oil will be pushed to be domestically developed. In regards to causing a double dip, I think it may cut discretionary travel and force some to rethink what is actually necessary. Most businesses currently seem to be able to pass on some of the costs associated with this extra expense."

Speaking of gas crises, your reporter came across an interesting article regarding BP's efforts in Florida. State officials announced Monday that the Northwest Florida Tourism Council will receive a $30 million grant to help offset the impact to the area's tourism following the April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Check out the link to this article and post your thoughts in the SC Forum.

On to more of this week's headlines . . .
