What is the difference between StockCentral & NAIC Data?
|
We're looking at education stocks in my club, and someone researching Apollo (APOL) posted an ITK file that shows their last quarter earnings at $1.06. Stock Central shows it as .57. This is quite a difference and changes the percentages enormously. I checked out the NAIC data using the betterinvesting site and that is definitely what they show. Where does such a difference come from and who am I to believe?
I've attached the 2 SSGs. The one with NAIC Data is APOL-ND, the one with StockCentral data is APOL-SC. Even things like Insider % are greatly different.

After some research, I think I may have answered my own question. It seems that Stock Central is reporting the GAAP figures and NAIC Data is reporting the adjusted or non-GAAP figures.
In my opinion the best way to use these two sets of data is to start with the GAAP figures and look at the adjustments in the non-GAAP to decide for yourself if they seem reasonable and make those adjustments if they do.
The actual filing of the 8K or 10K with the SEC is a good place to get the company's explanation of why they feel adjustments are warranted.
Motley Fool has a good article about GAAP that I found useful.
