THE LIFELONG LEARNING EDITION
3 September 2009

READER POSITIONS JUXTAPOSED!
Gazette's Whimsical Style . . . To Be!

Ah, yes, your reporter notes that readers have staged a most respectful controversy recently over the Gazette, centering around this age-old question: To be or not to be?...written in whimsical fashion, that is.

In recent weeks, the Pony Express has delivered a number of reader comments that your conscientious reporter finds most insightful. The majority of readers give a thumbs up to the Gazette's most interesting and intriguing of writing styles. It seems Lady Luck continues to shine favorably upon whimsy, which is but a continuation of a well-loved standard created by this reporter's most talented predecessor. . .

Remember, any and all comments and burning questions for your reporter may be submitted via the following email addy: GazetteReporter@iclub.com. And, just a gentle reminder, these writings may indeed appear in a future issue of the Gazette. . .

Onto this week's headlines...

SEPTEMBER IS UPON US
Gazette Reporter Advocates for Lifelong Learning

Was that not a big yellow school bus that passed your most observant reporter on this very day? And, are those crimson-tipped Maple tree leaves not a telltale sign that Autumn is indeed upon us?

Alas, your learned reporter points out that September kicks off yet another school year for the young'uns . . . and serves as a reminder to all of us that though we may not find ourselves officially reporting on the first day of school, we are still students in that bigger classroom we call Life.

That said, your reporter eagerly points to some of the vast educational resources located right beneath your nose — at where else but StockCentral.com! When you find yourself overcome with nostalgia, why not opt for a trip to the StockCentral Learning Library in lieu of memory lane?

There, you can learn everything from how to compare and contrast various stock data resources to how to analyze a bank stock or conduct an annual investment club audit. You can even invite SC Founder Doug Gerlach to speak at your event!

GERLACH'S AUTUMN APPEARANCES CONFIRMED!
Stock Guru to Spread the Word 'Cross Country

On the subject of speaking at events, there is no topic nearer or dearer to the heart of guru Doug Gerlach than investment education. According to Mssr. Gerlach's Press Corps, he will be making the following appearances across the land this fall:

  • Sept. 12: Heart of Illinois Chapter's Investor's Fair;
  • Oct. 3: Central PA Chapter's Education Fair;
  • Oct. 24: Solo appearance at the daylong Big Bend Chapter event;
  • Nov. 12-14: The AAII Investor Conference in Orlando;
  • Nov. 21: Puget Sound Investors Education Conference.

Mark your calendar. And rest assured, more details are forthcoming.

LEARNING IS ALL THE RAGE
Are Strayer Education's Prospects "Boundless"?

Your most education-minded reporter, who moonlights as a college writing professor, knows very well that the worst of times for many industries are the best of times in academia. It is when jobs are most scarce that educational institutions find themselves busting at the seams. And this indeed seems to be the case with Strayer Education, Inc., a company that's seen its Take Stock Quality Rating in the Complete Roster of Quality Companies grow by leaps and bounds from 6.8 in 2006 to a recent 9.5 or even 10.0!

"Strayer's prospects seem boundless, especially in this time when people are turning to education to improve their career prospects," SC member Richard Vogel notes on the StockCentral forum. "This optimistic position is supported by the improvement in the Take Stock Quality Rating to 9.5 to 10, depending on when you look at it. They continue to grow into new locations in new states while keeping their debt at minimal levels. However, I would feel better if I saw their stock price drop about 20 - 25 points."

Don't be bashful. What's your take on Strayer -- and the Education Services Industry overall? Is it a boon, or a bust? Be sure to drop in on the SC Forum and share your pearls of wisdom.

TODAY'S ENTIRELY RELEVANT QUOTATION

"I'm a firm believer that to really understand a business takes years, not months. As an investment analyst you think you understand a business from the outside, but the reality is that, once you are inside, you can go on learning for five or ten years. "

- Chris Corrigan, Australian Businessman
