Do You Have Bragging Rights, or Should Your Strategy Be Benched?
MyStockPortfolio, myICLUB Can Help You Benchmark Returns

You've established a solid investment strategy and you're sticking to it. But how is it working? Measuring investment success is an important part of the overall discipline. ICLUBcentral's Doug Gerlach in the March Lunchtime Learning webinar explaining the importance of taking the time at least once a year to review your portfolio's performance to see how things are actually working. "The only way to really know if your strategy is working is to take an objective look at how your collection of stocks is performing," Gerlach says. As he describes in this archived webinar, clubs may use myICLUB.com to get a benchmark analysis of portfolio performance; individuals can use MyStockPortfolio.com.

Among the considerations when measuring your investment success is understanding the "simple return" concept, or the actual percentage change in an investment's value, aka the "cumulative return." Be aware, this measure is sometimes used by stock promoters to tour outlandish stock performance, because with no time value applied, it doesn't actually tell you much about the true performance of the security, Gerlach notes. Therefore, using "total return" is a better approach to measuring investment success because it shows the actual rate of return of the investment over time, with price appreciation and (usually) dividends. "Compound annual return" is another way of looking at how stocks have performed, but it poses some challenges, which Gerlach outlines.
