This is a special note in a few ways:

  1. While I've written notes on moving Toolkit information from one computer to another in the past, the focus has been on moving your own information when buying a new computer, or as a way to make a backup. This note is intended as a way to share library files between different club members, while still allowing those members to keep and use their own libraries.
  2. As much as many of the postings I make here are inspired by calls or emails, what that usually means is that I've noticed a trend in what folks are asking about over time, and want to address it in a post. This post is due to a single member who brought to my attention an idea that I cannot remember having come across before.
  3. This is the first time in memory that I've collaborated with someone outside of ICLUB on creating one of these posts.

With those at the top of the page, here is a set of steps put together for the express pupose of allowing members to share a library file between themselves, while also being able to keep and use their own libraries:

Copying the Investment Club Library to an attachment to email to club
members
.

1.       Open Toolkit & note or remember the Library path and file name which is in the Title
line of the Toolkit Window. The two most common locations are:

a.       C:\ program Files \ IclubCentral \ Toolkit6 \ TK.MDB

b.      C:\ program Files(x86) \ IclubCentral \ Toolkit6 \ TK.MDB

2.       Close Toolkit, and then browse the Library path down to the Toolkit6 folder

3.       Select the TK.MDB file, then right-click & select Copy

4.       Close any open windows, then right-click any open area on the desktop, and select Paste

5.       Click once to select the copied icon, then right-click and select Rename

6.       Change the name by appending '.RemoveThisDotAndText' after the .MDB

7.       If you started with a file named TK.MDB, then when complete, the file would be named ‘TK.MDB. RemoveThisDotAndText’

8.       Likely you'll get a warning message 'If you change a file name extension, the file might become unusable.  Are you sure you want to change it?' Click YES, or OK if this sort of message appears.

9.       Prepare an Email & attach the renamed file from the desktop & send to the
club members

10.   Optional step, if needed:

a.       The multiple Library function can be activated by clicking :
Options > Preferences > General > Show Advanced Library Options

Saving the emailed file once it arrives.

1.       Right-click on the file, and then choose Copy.

2.       Close or minimize the email.

3.       Right-click any open space on the desktop, and choose Paste

4.       Right-click the file, and Rename

5.       Remove the dot and the long instruction.

a.       Continuing with the previous example, the file would once again be named TK.MDB

6.       Likely you'll get a warning message 'If you change a file name extension, the file might become unusable.  Are you sure you want to change it?’ Click YES or OK if this sort of message appears.

b.      NOTE For the Member Receiving: Do not re-use any of your existing Toolkit Library names, unless you intend to replace them with the file you have just re-named.

Moving the file, once it has been renamed.

1.       Right-click the renamed file, and then choose Copy.

2.       Open Toolkit & note or remember the Library path and file name which is in the Title
line of the Toolkit Window. The two most common locations are:

a)      C:\ program Files \ IclubCentral \ Toolkit6 \

b)      C:\ program Files(x86) \ IclubCentral \ Toolkit6 \

3.       Close Toolkit, and then browse the Library path down to the Toolkit6 folder

4.       Open the Toolkit folder.

5.       Go to the Either the Edit, or Organize menu, and choose Paste.

6.       Close any open windows.

Selecting the new library.

NOTE: The following steps can always be reversed to return to a personal library.

1.       Open Toolkit, go to the Library menu, and select Library Manager

2.       In the new window that comes up, select 'Open a previously Created Toolkit Library.’

3.       This will open the ‘Locate Toolkit Library’ window.

4.       Click the newly pasted filename.MDB, and then click Open.

5.       The Library manager window will show that Toolkit is now using the file you have just selected.

6.       Click the Close button to return to Toolkit.

With very special thanks to Mr. Roger Mara for bringing this idea up in the first place, and also for doing a large part of the work to get these steps to a working order.
