Usually this means the program isn't running in administrator mode, and when it tries to make a connection for an update, Windows is blocking that connection.

Since we have run into cases where activating Admin mode for the program after using it as erased data, the first thing we suggest is to make a backup of any stocks you want to save.

To make a backup when Admin mode is not active:

1. Create a new folder on your computer desktop. This will hold your SSG files. The name doesn't matter, but for this example, we're using Analyst SSG Files.
2. Once the folder is created, open Stock Analyst, and go to File > Export > SSG Data
3. On the right-hand side of the window, double-click C:\, then Users, then your name, then Desktop, and lastly the new folder created in step one.
4. If you want to select only a few companies, hold down the Ctrl key, and click on each one. Otherwise, simply click the Select All button.
5. Click Start Export, and then OK when Analyst reports that the export is complete, and then Close on the Export window.
6. Close Stock Analyst.

Setting Admin mode:

You can do this temporarily by right-clicking on the Stock Analyst shortcut, and selecting the Run As Administrator option.
If so, Windows will ask you to allow the program to operate. After this, Stock Analyst may ask you to register, which you can skip.

From here, you will be able to update. After updating, close stock Stock Analyst.

Re-open Stock Analyst with a regular double-click, and it will be updated.

If your list of companies is no longer there, you can open the Analyst SSG Files folder on your desktop, and double-click to open up and save those companies back into your database.

If you want to permanently set the program to run in admin mode, take the following steps:

1. With the program closed, click the WINDOWS button in the lower left corner of your screen.
2. If the program does not already appear, type its name in the START SEARCH box until you find the program.
3. Right-click on the icon, then click PROPERTIES.
4. On the properties window, click the COMPATIBILITY tab.
5. On this tab, click RUN THIS PROGRAM IN COMPATIBILITY MODE.
6. Make sure the selection under this shows Windows XP
7. Also on this tab, click RUN THIS PROGRAM AS ADMINISTRATOR.
8. Click APPLY, then OK.

If you have the User Account Control (also called UAC) active, Windows will ask you to allow the program to run when you open it now. This is normal, and barring any changes, will happen each time the program is opened.
