News reports yesterday forecast that prices at the pump might reach $5 by Memorial Day Weekend. Yikes.

My question is -- How will this affect our economic recovery? And is it a matter of perception or more a matter of actual impact?

Rising gas prices always seems to spark heated controversy in general conversation. Can Americans learn to accommodate, or does it have the potential to throw us back into a double-dip recession?

Thoughts?

My personal opinion is that Americans will never learn to conserve. Beyond that I see this may push alternative energy solutions to the forefront. All kinds, wind, solar, nuclear, natural gas, and oil will be pushed to be domestically developed. In regards to causing a double dip, I think it may cut discretionary travel and force some to rethink what is actually necessary. Most businesses currently seem to be able to pass on some of the costs associated with this extra expense.
Another subject may be what will have a greater impact. The lack of product flow from Japan for an extened period or cuts in govt spending, much of which does end up in the hands of the private sector. The combination of the three mentioned headwinds may have that undesired consequence.

Learning to conserve will require a few generations before it happens, in my opinion.  We have the attitude we're entitled.  That attitude needs to change before we can actually learn to conserve.  I can remember my mother going next door to borrow a cup of flower so she could finish something she wanted to bake.  Not today, you'd be considered insane, or at least the neighbor's eyes would rotate skyward at such a request.  Or, they might offer to drive you to a store.

regarding sacrifice, I saw some ration stamps that were issued for WWII days, everything from sugar, to gasoline, to what type of products were available. People pitched in and gave it up, maybe grumbled a bit, but they knew it was for the common good. Forget that today and more than likely the next generation or so.

I don’t see sacrifice happening unless it’s forced on us. Look at the response to recent wars where the majority of “sacrifices” have been shouldered by military families, not by the American public at large. Too many Americans think only about today – not tomorrow. Our memories are too short. What we become passionate about today all too often falls by the wayside as we succumb to the demands of our daily lives -- jobs, kids activity schedules, sports events, computer gaming, etc. And, too many believe in a premise that we’re a nation of entitlements and are lined up at the public trough for that next handout.

...and then to take this one step farther if we weren't such a consuming nation what would that do to output and the growth of economies???

Yep, and we all had a sticker on the windshield of our car (not cars) which indicated how much gasoline we could buy, provided we had the coupons that allowed a purchase.  The attitude was to help in any way possible the guys who were actually doing the fighting.
