I'm posting this up very early, since I'll be down in St. Louis at BINC starting Wednesday. One thing that always happens at shows is that folks will want to trade ssg files that they've worked on, so with that in mind, here's a quick how-to on trading files. 

First of all, lets set a default export location; you have the choice to change this any time you export, but setting this default first means one less thing you may have to dig around for latter.

  1. With Toolkit open, click on the Preferences button, and then the File Locations tab.
  2. Next to the "Default Path for Export" field click Browse.
  3. A new window opens allowing you to select the default path for export.
  4. While you might be tempted to select the C: drive, or your Documents folder, I suggest that you scroll up to the top of the list and click on Desktop, and then click OK.
  5. With the destination set, click OK again on the Preferences window. The next time you go to make an export, Toolkit will automatically select the Desktop as the location. 

 

Next, exporting a file:
  1. With Toolkit open, go to the File menu, and select Export Data.
  2. Select the portfolio you want to export from. Selecting Stock Library will give you the option to export any file in your copy of Toolkit. 
  3. Click the name of the company that you would like to export, and then click Add; this can be done multiple times, if you want to export more than one company.
    1. Note that there is also an Add All button on this window; clicking this will add all the stocks from the selected portfolio as companies you want to export. 
  4. When the stocks you want to export are listed on the right-hand side of the window, make sure you go down to the Export Format menu, and select the format you want to use. If you know that everyone getting the file will be using Toolkit, go ahead and select that format; if you aren't sure, select the SSG format instead.
  5. Click The OK button at the bottom of the window.
  6. This will open the "Select Export Destination" screen where you will select whether the file will be exported.
  7. If you've already set a default location, it will be selected for you; just remember, Toolkit doesn't know how to save files onto a CD or DVD.
    1. If you're going to be trading files on a removable drive, find that drive under Computer or My Computer in the list of locations, and click to select it.
  8. Click OK; Toolkit will save the file(s) to the place you specified, and then close the window.
  9. With this done, you can unplug the drive, and hand it off to the person doing the importing
    1. It may go without saying, but you can also export files out to the desktop, and send them by email; they're small enough that most email services shouldn't have any problem sending more than one file at a time.

 

Assuming that you're importing from someone who just handed you a portable drive, go ahead and plug it in, then open up your Toolkit. If that's not the case, and you are getting a file by email, or from a web site, make sure to save the file on to your desktop first.

 

  1. Select File > Import Company > From My Computer
  2. Select the type of file, and the location. If you've been given a portable drive, select that from the list of locations. If not, select Desktop instead. Either way, a list of available files will be displayed.
  3. Click to select the file you want to import, and click OK; Toolkit will open the file and display the ssg for you.
  4. If you already have a copy of this company in your library, make sure to go up into the File menu, and choose Save Company As; make a change to the name, and click OK to save the company to your Library. If this is a new company, you can simply save it right away into your Toolkit library by going to File, and choosing Save.
