I've been on the sidelines for a few years and have bought a new computer with Windows Vista in the meantime.  I can't seem to get my old Classic Plus to load up price and ssg files.   Also my internet connectivity is limited since I installed it.  I can't go to some web sites, but can go to others.  I can go to stockcentral.com.   Is there a known compatibility issue between my old software and Vista?  Please say yes, and you know how to fix it!

I hate VISTA.In a future life it will be a MAC.
Anyway,I had a similar problem in associating ssg files from Stock Central into my Toolkit 6.
This was Doug Gerlach's answer and it worked:

You need to associate the *.SSG extension with TK6 in Windows. The instructions will vary depending on the version of Windows you might be using, but right-click on the *.SSG file on your computer and select Open WIth..., then navigate to the Toolkit 6 *.exe file in your Program Files directory. With regard to your "slowness" problem, you might try installing ADVANCED SYSTEM CARE.It is free from IOBIT.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately Classic Plus doesn't work that way (when it works, that is). Here are the facts.

1. Classic Plus worked fine on my old computer (God rest its soul).
2. My new computer worked fine until I installed Classic Plus.
3. My new computer isn't and never was slow; since I installed (and uninstalled) Classic Plus, it either quickly loads up a web site, or fails completely. It always fails at the same particular sites, it always succeeds at the others.
4. Classic Plus doesn't interact with OPS.
5. My friend's laptop works fine on my internet connection.

I'm alleging that Classic Plus screwed up Vista connectivity, not the other way around. I'd be willing to forget Classic Plus and purchase a more modern product, such as TK6, but the computer is messed up now. Is there a recovery?

Darin, I can't advise you on unscrewing your
computer, but would point out for all that Classic Plus is a program designed
years ago for computers on a completely different level than they are
today.  Like a lot other software from that time, it just won't work
right any more on new operating systems, if it works at all.

People don't bat an eyelash about paying to buy an
upgrade of a host of other programs, why are they reluctant to upgrade
stock study or club accounting programs that keep up with new features and
capabilities?    Try TK6 for a free trial.  It will
blow you away with its advances over Classic, and even TK 5.

Darin

I agree with Gene Rooks. Loose Classic Plus and buy Toolkit 6.

It is awesome.I used to have Stock Analyst + but TK6 is much better for me.

Hi Darin,

I'll reply directly via email.  From my experience, both in theory and in practice, there's no way Classic can break Vista.  That said, after you get a million calls, you can get a one in a million issue, so I'll wait until I have all the facts.

The example I repeat to the team refers to how vanilla ice cream causes cars to fail to start properly. (from http://www.snopes.com/autos/techno/icecream.asp)

This is a weird but true story ... A complaint was received by the Pontiac Division of General Motors:

This is the second time I have written you, and I don't blame you for not answering me, because I kind of sounded crazy, but it is a fact that we have a tradition in our family of ice cream for dessert after dinner each night. But the kind of ice cream varies so, every night, after we've eaten, the whole family votes on which kind of ice cream we should have and I drive down to the store to get it.

It's also a fact that I recently purchased a new Pontiac and since then my trips to the store have created a problem. You see, every time I buy vanilla ice cream, when I start back from the store my car won't start. If I get any other kind of ice cream, the car starts just fine.

I want you to know I'm serious about this question, no matter how silly it sounds: 'What is there about a Pontiac that makes it not start when I get vanilla ice cream, and easy to start whenever I get any other kind?'"

The Pontiac President was understandably skeptical about the letter, but sent an engineer to check it out anyway. The latter was surprised to be greeted by a successful, obviously well educated man in a fine neighborhood. He had arranged to meet the man just after dinner time, so the two hopped into the car and drove to the ice cream store. It was vanilla ice cream that night and, sure enough, after they came back to the car, it wouldn't start.

The engineer returned for three more nights. The first night, the man got chocolate. The car started. The second night, he got strawberry. The car started. The third night he ordered vanilla. The car failed to start.

Now the engineer, being a logical man, refused to believe that this man's car was allergic to vanilla ice cream. He arranged, therefore, to continue his visits for as long as it took to solve the problem. And toward this end he began to take notes: he jotted down all sorts of data, time of day, type of gas used, time to drive back and forth, etc. In a short time, he had a clue: The man took less time to buy vanilla than any other flavor. Why? The answer was in the layout of the store.

Vanilla, being the most popular flavor, was in a separate case at the front of the store for quick pickup. All the other flavors were kept in the back of the store at a different counter where it took considerably longer to find the flavor and get checked out. Now the question for the engineer was why the car wouldn't start when it took less time.

Once time became the problem — not the vanilla ice cream — the engineer quickly came up with the answer: vapor lock. It was happening every night, but the extra time taken to get the other flavors allowed the engine to cool down sufficiently to start. When the man got vanilla, the engine was still too hot for the vapor lock to dissipate.

Moral of the story: even insane-looking problems are sometimes real.

That story must be 50 years old. Cars don't vapor lock anymore!!

Nevertheless, it seems that Classic Plus is exonerated for the moment. I regained connectivity by (as a last resort) re-imaging the system (I discovered that Vista has a wipe and re-install feature). Then I lost partial connectivity again after a slew of Windows updates were subsequently automatically installed that very night. Then I regained connectivity after restoring my computer back to the day before the automatic updates. All this took place without Classic Plus being involved. The problem apparently has to do with a Windows update which took place around the same time I attempted to install Classic Plus (vanilla ice cream syndrome).

The moral of the story is if you have Vista and can't run Classic Plus or TK6 or MSN messenger or whatever, click on Control Panel>Programs and Features>View Installed Updates>Uninstall everything going back to around October 2008. Then click on Control Panel>Windows Updates>Change Settigns and disable automatic updates until the next freezing of hell.

I'll update you later as to whether Classic Plus actually runs on this system.
