In Toolkit 6 I have entered the login information for *both* my BI and StockCentral subscriptions.

However, the Roster of Quality portfolio is accessable only when I have the Stock Central subscription selected as the active data source at Options, Preferences, Data Feed.  Is that restriction intentional (and necessary)?

Even if it is intentional, when I have the BI data feed active and try to access the Roster of Quality portfolio the error message says "The Roster of Quality is for StockCentral subscribers.  To subscribe, please visit ...".  This is not an accurate description of what's wrong.  (I note that page 12 of the Toolkit 6 manual says, among the new features of Toolkit 6, that "No longer will error messages be vague or inconclusive.")

On the topic of error messages, I'll mention that when I try to download data for a ticker symbol that doesn't exist ("XX"), I get a dialog box titled "Toolkit 6" with an "OK" button but no message.  Clicking OK takes me to the "Company Locator" window.

I  notice on Pg 197 of the TK Manual it states Only one data feed can be active at a time. Jim, perhaps this relates to your concern.

I am unclear on what Roster of Quality (Locked) really means.  I have selected the Stock Central data feed via preferences but this does not change the locked designation.  I understood locked to mean comapnies could not be added or deleted from this portfolio while one can make changes ot the individual SSGs for a company.  Instead locked means that once a week a new set of companies will automatically be loaded to provide an updated Roster of Quality.  Am I understanding this correctly?

The TK Manual Guide provides little information  to clarify this.

Has anyone been able to get the locked designation to dissappear and if so how?

I made a poor choice of terminology in my post (and I've revised it).  The Roster of Quality is never supposed to be "unlocked" in the sense that you can change it.  It's just there to look at.

However you can't even look at it if you have BI as your active data source (even if you have entered your StockCentral subscription information).  You have to go into Options, Preferences, Data Feed and click the StockCentral button before you can look at the Roster of Quality portfolio.  If you forget to do this, the error message you get is misleading (it suggests that you are not a StockCentral subscriber).

I don't see any reason for this restriction, but even if the restriction is intentional the error message should be improved.

Jim, I believe the reason for the restriction
is The Roster of Quality Companies is a feature from TakeStock incorporated into
StockCentral, as part of their package of benefits.  As such, they hope it
will encourage signing up for StockCentral data in order to access this and
other StockCentral features.  So, they aren't giving it away to BI service
users, and I don't know if the software could determine those who are active
in both, therefore it is only available if you are actually using the SC data at the time.

I notice it's very interesting (and complicated) what happens if you have a saved Stock Study for a stock that happens to be in the Roster of Quality portfolio too.  The data and judgment from your own stock study gets merged with the data and judgment from the Roster of Quality portfolio study when you view a study from the Roster of Quality portfolio.

If you have multiple saved Stock Studies for the same ticker symbol, things get even more interesting.  The Roster of Quality study is merged with the data/judgment for one of your saved Stock Studies (the last one created?).  If you delete that stock study, the Roster of Quality study merges itself with the data/judgment from your remaining study.

If you edit data or judgment from a Roster of Quality study and save the changes, your original personal study is where it gets saved (so the original information from your own Stock Study are lost).

Toolkit 6 certainly could determine those who have subscriptions for both BI and StockCentral data.  It's right here on the Data Feed screen in Options, Preferences.  IClub, for some reason, decided not to do that.  I think it's inconvenient and unnecessary and I wish they'd change it.

But the error message is not helpful at all.

I was out of town, so I just installed the finished TK 6 & found 2 problems right away.  I don't remember seeing them in my scan of many e-mails about TK 6.

1.  I opened a new co., not in my data base, & the First Impression did not appear.  I don't have "Hide First Impression " checked in Preferences.  The help screen for General Preferences doesn't even show that option.

2.  The minimize button on top right of the stock study is grayed out & I can't minimize the study.  I used this in TK 5 when studying several cos. at once.  The term "minimize" is not in Help.

Did you have the StockCentral datafeed selected? It won't work otherwise.

We'll look into that -- I'm not sure it's intentional or if there is some reason for it.

The primary reason that only StockCentral users see the Roster listing (and the First Impression screen, for that matter) is that both of these use/calculate/display the Take Stock Quality Index, and we're trying to avoid the discrepancies that occur when the Index is calculating using different data or data from different dates. By restricting the Roster to StockCentral subscribers, we can be sure that the Quality Index that's displayed on the Roster listing in TK6 will be the same as the Quality Index that's displayed on the First Impression screen -- not to mention in Take Stock on StockCentral, and in the Screener on StockCentral, etc.

Honestly, my first impulse was to enable these two features no matter which data feed a user had selected, but since we've spent so much time validating the Take Stock Quality Index and making it consistent in all of our tools and sites, we just couldn't face the inevitable questions that would arise about any particular discrepancies if someone used a different data feed,

We'll work on the error message.

Thanks.

I'm going to propose this as the error message text in this instance:

To view the Roster of Quality Companies, you must be a StockCentral subscriber and have it selected as your active Data Feed in your Toolkit 6 preferences. For more information, visit http://www.stockcentral.com.

Also, I'll note that when you select the BetterInvesting Data Feed in Preferences, it tells you what behavior to expect -- specifically with regard to not having access to the Roster or the First Impression screen.

In this case, "Locked" means that the stocks in the portfolio cannot be removed from it nor can new stocks be added to it. The listing of stocks itself in the Roster of Quality "Portfolio" will change each week when the new Roster is downloaded to the program.

Any stocks that you have studies for in your library will appear in black text in the Roster list; any stocks that you do not have studies for will appear in red text. You can create a stock study for any company in the Roster, and once you save it, it will live on in your Library whether or not it continues to appear in the Roster.
