SSG Class-Textbook and SSG Bloopers

I am co-teaching an SSG Class 24 Feb-3 Mar. We will be using the BI SSG text instead of a myriad of slides ...has anyone used [been taught] this approach ... this is our first time and we are looking to use it long-term ... anyone have some tips? or potential pitfalls to avoid? I know Milwaukee was experimenting with this ... also, part of what we wanted to enrich the class was SSG bloopers ... anyone know the author [so I can get ppt and customize - with proper credit given of course] THanks, Irina

Diane deGrand (?) at the Milwaukee Chapter produced at set of PowerPoint presentations keyed to the Stock Selection Handbook. I'd try getting in touch with her for an updated copy.
You say that you'll be using the book rather than a "myriad of slides." I see nothing wrong with using slides in the "lecture" part of the class. It's probably more effective to do that to speak to the whole class. If your slides are keyed to the text, you can also have the members of the class work on their own (you'll need at least 4 or more classroom assistants) and you can also assign specific reading and/or exercises as "homework". |

Joe: I am not bemoaning so much the quality of the slides as their quantity... several aspects of my personal.philosophy we have the text, why not use it... in addition, the text can be taught for the user to use as a long time reference... instead of a pile of slides, which while useful at the time, tend to lose currency [yes, national does do the SSG slides for free, but you have to get them in to them in time, and... bringing all those slides to the classes is a burden] ... along with other materials... in addition, there is continuity of approprach, with the limited numbers of volunteers and teachers, our chapter is trying a new method...Irina

I certainly think that you can and should teach the class the way that you see fit. I'd never argue against that.
Also, I'd never take a PowerPoint presentation created by someone else and use it without modification. Still, I do think that Diana deGrand's materials could be uses. Simple pick the slides that YOU want to use, or add your own, or modifiy what is there to fit your class plans.
Oh, and there is no rule that says that you have to give students copies, either.

I once ran into a couple of gals from a local club in the library using Value Line and discussing the SSG. I was there for the same use. When I approached their table and asked if I might borrow the version they were not using, I commented on the familiar SSG. They seemed suprised thatthere was anyone else around in NAIC. I answeered a couple of questions they had and moved on. Later one of them asked if I would be interested in addressing their group and explaining the SSG. I agreed to do this. What I did was select and industry the women might find boring - automotive parts. I searched and found Auto Zone (AZO). (2000 @ $22.00). I created a completed SSG, copied it onto an overhead and went through all the steps giving them only some information at a time and asking them to complete the data on their own sheets. (also gave them a copy of Value Line). This took about one hour and told them I was not an official instructor for NAIC nor was this a recommendation. I ran into one of the women several months later. They bought 6 shares and held them through the $80.00 market a few years later. Don't know why they sold - if you've seen the price today. MY BLOOPER, I did not buy for myself. Sure wish I had.

Irina - apologies this is so late.
I teach classes about once a year on basic SSG, and use the BI workbook for reading assignments. Then I hit the highlights of the reading section with Powerpoint slides and walk through examples.
If you're interested in any of the materials, let me know. I also created a powerpoint how-to for searching companies with the online screener and then importing the companies into TakeStock using an online service. I posted it to Douglas Gerlach a few months ago, but haven't seen it appear online yet. If you would be interested, send me your email and I'll start sending files.
