Alright, alright. I'll step up and say that I like the 'other' version better - simply because of the color scheme. To me it's more difficult here to focus on the different groupings of topics, etc. on the home community page. It might well be because the other site has similar color scheme to another forum I frequent, so I'll give this one a bit more time to grow on me...

Color schemes are "easy" to change. I'll keep that in mind.

Joe, I like the new approach. One exception: the Community page is too busy. Have to scroll a bunch (the bunch is bound to get much larger) to get to the items other than forums. Why not have a separate page for "forums"?

I don't know. This seems less slick and elegant than the other site, with regards to the icons, colors, etc. It's just not as clean.

There are several things going on all at once. - Functionality -- using DNN gives us some functionality that the straight YAF didn't have. In particular, this lets us set up things so that it is easy to partition off parts of the site for visitors, registered users, subscribers, and administrators. It is fairly clunky in YAF.
- Connecting the log in and registration process to the ICLUBcentral database. Again, difficult in YAF but much more straightforward with DNN.
- Site design
- much easier to adjust things with DNN
- "skins" used to determine look and (somewhat) feel.
Right now I'm at #1 and proceeding to #2. I'm trying to get all of the functionality to function, and then will connect up to the ICLUBcentral database for registration/subscription. I'll also be working on the color scheme, but not much for this week. There are a couple of other things, too. - I need to get this set up on the ICLUBcentral server ... something that I hope can be done tomorrow.
- I'd like for us to compare the functionality of this forum to the YAF forum that we have been using. At some point, the YAF forum will be available and can be "dropped" into this site ... provided that we prefer the YAF software.
There is another consideration, too. Although both YAF and DNN are "open source" projects, DNN seems to have a much better pedigree. There's a large team working on it, and there are even books to purchase. Also, Microsoft is somewhat behind the project. So ... DNN is to ASP.NET 2.0 much as apache is to the *nix open source world. We're much less alone and exposed if we go this route. YAF is primarily being developed by a couple of people, mostly in Europe -- that's not necessarily bad, but it is a much smaller developer base. Well ... those are my thoughts ... |

Well ... have I made it better?
I did a lot of work on the color schemes and some of the layout. I still have to change some of the blues in the forum to match the other colors better.
So tell me if I got and most of better... |

Joe,
a) The Community page looks very "busy". One suggestion is to make the fonts relatively uniform. Way too many different sizes and types and "boldness".
b) Navigation was not too bad.
c) I liked the e-mail alert from each forum. However when people (the masses that make up the BI community) sign up for too many of these, do you think they will get frustrated when they cannot find where they clicked on the check box? Just wondering.
d) The navigation signs. Are they correct? For example on the top it has community in red. But I am at least one more level deeper. I think.
But for the reaons you mentioned YAF vs DNN, this seems a logical choice.
I loked for the submit button. Had a hard time finding it. Please make it Black. Also Cancel.

Much better color scheme I think that the stocks by ticker should be collapsed under another group, as when the list is populated, no one will ever know that there are other forums below the stocks. I seem to be having some problem getting the site to 'remember' me, though the cookies seem fine - every now and then I look up and the 'login' button is available again. Brian

The little doubled up arrows on the right collapse a group.
A coming upgrade of the forum software will allow groups of groups. That should help some.
I'm not sure if I can configure a single group to open collapsed by default. But I'll look into that.

Yep! The stronger colors are more appealing to me.
I still think that the the stock forums should be separated from the other items on the Community page.
Question: Is a spell checker on board?

Got this error message and got kicked out when clicking on the 'other' stockcentral.
Forums My Profile Search An error has occurred. Error: community is currently unavailable.
Prefer "submit" as black text.

I got an alert about that time that there was a site problem. It's working just fine right now.
I've already made a note about "Submit" ...

First attempt to open this version usually times out. (Not a problem on the orignal version).
Second attempt works, but comes close to timing out agaian.
The log in has to be repeated each time.

I'm fairly certain it's an issue with the hosting site. I hope to fix that "soon."

I laccessed the site OK today. Did have to log in again.
The data quotes look great. Can't wait for the data!!!!
Could only delete my avatar, not change it.
Wrote a message to the CTSH forum. Checked the email box. When I hit "submit" I was taken to a screen telling me I did not have admin privilege. Could not get back to message, lost it.
The editing capability for the messages is awesome.
I found I could not insert a an image in the face of the text. Is that beyond possibility???

I'm not sure where I was at 1:57 PM today, but I was making a lot of changes in the forum. Much was "broken" for most of the day, so it is possible that some of what you saw was related.
After deleting your avatar, you can upload another one.
I may have privileges on some of the ticker forums screwed up. I will look into that tonight.
Brian White posted some messages about images. It may be that you need to attach images to your messages to post them easily. I've got things set to that you can attach 3 files to a single message. When can we see some cartoons? |
